Clearing Immigration at Singapore Checkpoint (By Bus)

Clearing immigration at both Singapore Woodlands Checkpoint and Tuas Checkpoint is the same. You need to bring down all your belongings from the bus, and head towards the immigration counter. Get ready your passport for clearance. You can use either the automated counter (which use fingerprint scanning), or the normal manual counter. Always smile to the immigration officers, a friendly gesture for the overworked officers for their hard work.

Once you are cleared at the immigration counter, you may proceed to the bus bay to board the waiting buses.

Tips: You may want to go to the toilet first before boarding the bus.
This is in case there is heavy traffic before you reach JB immigration.

Getting To Johor Bahru Checkpoint By Bus

After clearing Singapore immigration, you should be heading towards the bus bay to board the waiting buses. You can take any buses there, as all buses will go to Johor Bahru Immigration. However, staying in the same bus as you come from will help you to save some cost. Nevertheless, most people will choose convenience over small savings like this. Once you hop onto the bus (hopefully you find a seat), just wait for the bus to arrive at Johor Bahru Immigration.

If you clear immigration at Woodlands Checkpoint, you will get to Johor Bahru immigration at JB Sentral.

If you clear immigration at Tuas Checkpoint, you will get to Johor Bahru immigration at JB Second Link.

Getting to Johor Bahru by bus

Clearing Immigration at Johor Bahru Checkpoint (By Bus)

Whether you are entering Johor Bahru by Woodlands Checkpoint or Tuas Checkpoint, clearing immigration will be the same when you reach one of the two Johor Bahru immigration centres.

The bus will arrive at Johor Bahru Immigration, where you will need to alight with all your belongings. Move ahead and join the queue at one of the immigration counters. Get ready your passport and remember to give a friendly smile to the immigration officers who have worked long hours to serve the public.

After the officer has cleared you at the immigration counter, please remember to check for the immigration stamp on your passport, with correct date stamping. This is a very important item to check, which many people may take for granted. Do remember that if there is no proper stamping on the passport, you will have trouble clearing the Johor Bahru immigration when you come back later.

Once you are cleared at the immigration counter, heads toward the baggage scanning machine. Put your big luggage into the scanning machine, and put all small items, such as mobile phone, key chains, wallets into a small plastic container and put it through the scanning machine. Then personally you need to step over to be checked by the officers. You may sometimes be required to remove any metal objects to verification. So try to put all small metal objects like belts, watch into the small plastic container through the scanning machine. Once you are cleared at the baggage counter, you are ready to enter Johor Bahru and head to your destinations.

Getting To Your JB Destinations

After clearing Johor Bahru immigration, this is where the excitement starts.
If you clear immigration at Singapore Woodlands Checkpoint, you will end up at Johor Bahru immigration at JB Sentral. From here, City Square Shopping Mall and Komtar JBCC Shopping Mall are just opposite the immigration complex at JB Sentral, where you can walk across through an overhead bridge. You can also get on to other destinations from here, either by bus or taxi. Check out our guide on Getting Around In Johor Bahru (JB).

Feeling there are no more interesting places to visit in Johor Bahru? Well, Johor Bahru will always have new interesting places to visit, if you look hard enough. The latest addition is Desaru Coast Adventure Waterpark.

Many of the older Singaporeans will remember Desaru Resort, where there are nice beaches and chalets for spending a short holiday, with lots of water sports to enjoy. However, this place has kind of been forgotten, as the resort has not been upgraded for sometime to keep up with competition.

In recent year, the Malaysia government has identified this place as a key tourist spot to bring in more tourists to Johor Bahru. Thus the government has invested heavily in revamping Desaru Caost to bring back its former glory. Desaru Coast Adventure Waterpark is just one of the many attractions that is shaping up this wonderful holiday attraction. You can also find Hard Rock Hotel, Westin Hotel and Anantara Desaru Coast Resort and Villas. In addition, there is a 27-hole and 18-hole golf course, and many places for shopping and dining.

Desaru Coast Adventure Waterpark, Johor Bahru

Desaru Coast Adventure Waterpark is huge, it is 8.5 hectares in size. How big is that? It is approximately 12 soccer fields, so that is really huge. The waterpark is the largest in Malaysia, and has the capacity to accommodate 12,000 visitors a day. It features more than 20 kinds of wet and dry rides, slides and attractions. There are total of 5 play zones, there will surely be something for you.

Desaru Coast Adventure Waterpark has 5 play zones, including one for kids.

Tidal Wave Beach

Tidal Wave Beach is one of the largest wave pools in Southeast Asia holding more than four million gallons of water over nearly three acres. The wave generator can push waves up to 4m-high, making it one of the world’s biggest man-made waves. Guests can relax in luxury and enjoy the wave pool views from the Beachside Cabanas, or lounge along the 170-meter-long sandy shoreline of Tidal Wave Beach.

Kids Ahoy

Kids Ahoy has three age-appropriate play areas filled with water play equipment and a combined total of 13 different water slides designed for our younger guests. These zones are splashing favourites for toddlers, young children, tweens and early teens!

Rip Tide

This ride will sweep you away at the steepest angles and fastest speeds giving an unparalleled feeling of weightlessness. Travel downhill to enter the first twister where you will slide back and forth several times then circle around in the eye of the storm before exiting and hitting the second and third twisters ending with a splash into the pool.

Kraken’s Revenge

Kraken’s Revenge is a combination roller coaster and splashing flume ride that takes thrill seekers up 30 metres above the ground in rolling “boats” before swooping and spinning through a full 360º horizontal loop, followed by a diving 27-metre drop to the shipwrecking Kraken sea monster waiting in the pool of water below. Riders can reach speeds up to 70 km/h as they plummet to a splashing finish.

Beach Side Cabanas

The Hard Rock Hotel Desaru Coast looks out on the wave pool of the Beach Side Cabanas and the 170-metre-long sandy shoreline of Tidal Wave Beach, with a dedicated entrance to the Desaru Coast Adventure Waterpark for hotel guests.

Beach Surf Wall

A safe and high-energy surf simulator where surfing beginners or enthusiasts can catch and ride a radical artificial wave. The Surf Wall can accommodate up to five boogie boarders or two stand-up surfers at one time.

Wild Whirl

On Wild Whirl, riders on rafts hurtle down a steep entrance channel, then shoot into the wide-open bowl high on the wall for peak thrills. Glued to the wall by centrifugal force and shot forward by momentum, they speed around the perimeter. As rafts and riders slow, they move to the centre drop chute for a quick and exciting exit. Water jets send rafts effortlessly into the patented CorkScrew™ and down a tunnel into the splash pool below.

Super Twister

The Super Twister leads riders cruising through radius curves before an unexpected drop into a funnel where they oscillate back & forth and then exit back into the enclosed tunnel and onto the next set of exciting curves & funnels.

The Tempest

Experience two high-energy funnels and a sudden 24-foot drop that allows for high-banking swings. Look out for a 55-foot tube slide with a funnel in the middle which will send you on a swirling vortex before completing the descent to splashdown.

Penawar Falls

With three separate waterfalls tumbling over each rising cliffs into a pond below, Penawar Falls is a sight for young and old alike. The giant Penawar Flower sends you on a discovery for a story of intrigue, pirates, villagers and young heroes!

Penaware River

At 350 meters, the Penawar River is a long, looping lazy river that floats amid lush greenery of riverbank and riverside fishing village scenes. Set among the Penawar River are four popular giant water slides – Wild Whirl, Super Twister, Riptide and The Tempest.

Penaware River Huts

Spread across the sand-lined Penawar River, the Penawar Huts feature economy cabanas, available for you to rent for your own personal and private use.

Swing Ship

The classic Swinging Ship theme park ride has three towering waterfalls cascading over a massive 13-metre-high rock cliffs. Mydin is a place where many Malaysians will visit to get grocery supplies, and it is the equivalent of NTUC Fairprice in Singapore.

Mydin has just opened its first hypermart in Johor Bahru, in Taman Mutiara Rini, Skudai. This is the biggest among the six branches in Johor, and is also the 27th hypermart in the whole of Malaysia. Mydin is popular among the locals, because the grocery items are really affordable to the locals. Mydin’s tagline is:

“Why Pay More? Buy at Wholesale Prices!”

That is why Malaysians loved Mydin, just like Singaporeans loved NTUC Fairprice.

Many Singaporeans like to buy fresh seafood in Johor Bahru. Most will go to the wet market where there are wide variety of seafood for sale. These seafood are usually mixture of kelong seafood and fresh water seafood. Kelong seafood are breed in sea water kelongs, while fresh water seafood are breed in fresh water ponds. These seafood are great, but they can never match those that are direct from the sea.

Why we say so?

Breed seafood, be it from kelongs or fresh water ponds, are fed with controlled food and sometimes anti-botics to ensure they don’t die due to sickness. Whereas seafood direct from the sea are natural food source, you can say it is organic if compared to vegetables. That is why there are some Singaporeans that will go to fishing villages in Johor Bahru in search of seafood directly catch from the sea each day.

One of the popular fishing village is in Pontian fish market. This is a great place and there are many fisherman selling their catch daily. The only problem with Pontian fish market is that it is quite far, about an hour drive or 50km from the Tuas Checkpoint. We would like to introduce to you another fishing village that offers the same fresh seafood catch daily, but is much nearer. It is located near to the Tuas Checkpoint. This Malay fishing village is known as Pendas Fresh Fish Market. Besides the fresh fish market, there are many other interesting things to see in this fishing village.

Price Of Seafood In Pendas Fishing Village

The price of seafood here is relatively cheaper when you compare to prices in Singapore. Take for example the batang fish. Batang fish cost RM32 per kg here. This is like S$10 per kg, which you can buy a whole big batang fish here. By the way, you can only purchase a whole fish, and nobody sell cut pieces of fish here.

Batang fish cost about RM32 per kg. One kg is one big fish.

Below is a price table for seafood in Pendas fishing village. The price is for your reference only, as sometimes the price can change due to season and weather, such as price increase during Chinese New Year.

Do you sums and it is not difficult to draw your conclusion whether this is value for money. All we can say is that using the same amount of money, you can probably buy in Singapore a small plastic bag of seafood, and will be easy to carry as the bag is light. With the same amount of money in Johor Bahru, you will need to use a much bigger plastic bag, and also it will be heavy for you to carry. Many Singaporeans actually carry their ice box or trolley to help carry the seafood to their cars. When you make comparison with the prices, do remember that the seafood in Pendas fishing village are fresh catch direct from the sea.

Fisherman At Work In Pendas Fishing Village

If you are early, you may be able to see the fisherman at work in Pendas fishing village. Fisherman went out to the sea during midnight, and work hard to catch fresh seafood direct from the sea. They usually will finish their catch in the early morning, and return to the fresh fish market to sell what they catch.

Many customers come early to wait for the fisherman to return. Many are Singapore cars.

We were lucky to chance upon giant grouper fish caught by the fisherman. It is also interesting to see how the fisherman lift up the giant grouper fishes from the fishing boat. Enjoy the videos.
